  7. |RNature and climate:|N Two big vulcanic islands, Savaii and Upolu, two smaller islands, Manono and Apolima, and many uninhabited islets.
  8. Savaii have some inaccessible cliffcoasts, but most coasts are low and protected by coral reefs.
  9. Highest peak, Mount Silisili, reaches 1844 m.a.s.l.
  10. Palmtrees and breadfruits grow along the coasts and in the interior are rainforests.
  11. Average temperature 26°C the whole year.

  14. |REconomy:|N 67% of the population is occupied in agriculture, mainly in selfsubsistent households. Most important crops are coconuts, bananas, cacao, taro and coffee.

  16. Some manufacturing for refining of the agricultural products and the forests.
  17. Most important exportgoods are copra and coffee.
  18. |RHistory:|N First visited by Europeans in the 18th century. The islands were united in one nation 1879 and 1899 divided as colonies of Germany and the USA.
  19. During World War I they were occupied by New Zealand. After the war a New Zealand mandate under the League of Nations, from 1945 under the UN.
  20. 1920 the islands had internal selfgoverning with a locally elected government.
  21. In 1962 Western Samoa became an independent nation, the first in the Polynesia.
  22. Member of the Commonwealth of Nations since 1970.
